Description
For your consideration a Sterling Silver Dunhill Rollboy lighter. The Lighter is in perfect working order. According to the magnificent book on Dunhill lighters by David Blei and Luciano Bottoni "The Dunhill Petrol Lighter A 'Unique' Story" page 281 The W&G Rollboy was first seen and patent applied for by Wise & Greenwood in 1953. If the information in the book is correct that makes this lighter the first seen as it is hallmarked 1952 and the only one known to exist for this early year, it may be a prototype. Alfred Dunhill marked important events with Lighters created especially for the occasion. Coronation lighters were embellished with a crown motif. Particularly desired by collectors are the large stamps that were used by the London Assay Office to hallmark lighters made in precious metals. Lighters created to commemorate a special occasion were hallmarked with an additional fifth touch stamp bearing the profile of the reigning monarch. The lighter comes with its original satin and velvet lined hard box or case. An interesting and historical detail is the Appointment to wording inside of the case or box it states BY APPOINTMENT TOBACCONISTS TO THE LATE KING GEORGE THE VI ALFRED DUNHILL LTD. This is further proof that it is the first of the W&G Rollboys as Queen Elizabeth ascended the thrones of seven countries in February 1952, on the death of her father King George VI. As her coronation took place on June 2nd 1953. The Queen would not have made purveyor appointments in early 1952 so the case has the Late King George VI.... The lighter has the original fill screw with built in spare flint compartment and screw on cap. The cap spring and flint tension device that is similar to the Cartier licensed design Dunhill Tallboy from the 1930's. The lighter has an unusual look as the cap springs and flint tension device stick out a bit from the top of the open lighter; the design and parts are original and correct for this rare lighter. This is a fifty six year old lighter the condition of the lighter and box is excellent with only minor ware as can be seen in the high resolution pictures. Don’t miss your opportunity to acquire this extremely rare and historically significant Dunhill Sterling Rollboy lighter with large coronation hallmarks and, box set.
